Celluloid Closet Questions

Question 1:
Do you think there are any stereotypes that are common in American film or television in how Chinese people are portrayed? You can consider both positive and negative stereotypes.

I think the stereotype of Chinese people in American culture is the people with broken English, and also wear the Chinese cloths that are weird to them. And they often eat the McDonald's meal because their English are not very well. Another common stereotype is the wife should take care all of family, and it is hard and difficult to live. Most of Taiwan movie use this stereotypes on stage and TV show.

Question 3
At one point in the movie we watched, they mention that they think it is (in the United States) socially acceptable to show lesbians showing physical affection, but showing gay men with even minor physical affection (a kiss, a brush on the cheek) really bothers people. Why do you suppose this is so? Do you think this is the same in Taiwan? (another way to think of this question is to ask if two girls holding hands walking down the street are likely to get the same reaction as two males holding hands).

I think men aren't supposed to be seen touchy or sensitive guy in the society's stereotypes. So they should to show they are stronger than women, not do the same thing as women. Women are emotional and intimate that also considers to showing closer affection, and that's fine because people think that is a sign to show the two girls' relationship is very well. It didn’t matter. I can’t image the two men are holding tight on the street, kiss each other, even make sex that is comfortable scene.

Robert Frost - The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference
.

The two roads just like the choices we have. We often choice the life, career, and so on. We make decision when we meet the choices. We need to take responsibilities for our choices because we can’t re-choice the same thing after we make decision, but we sometimes feel regret our choice, and thinking “If my decision is another one, the end is the same as now, or not.” I think the narrator is a young person because we make many decisions as career, life type, the wife, the husband, the house, and so on when we are still young. We cant re-choice the one after we choice already. Even if we could choice again, but the situation is totally different as before we make FIRST decision that we can’t catch the time that was gone. I think the poem tell us that we shouldn’t regret our decision because we never know if we made different decision that the end is better, or not.

My thoughts on ‘The Times of Harvey Milk’

The Times of Harvey Milk

I think he is a courageous man for his sexual orientation that he met many press when he releases he is homosexual. In fact, I’m expecting his behavior because I will be afraid of releasing my sexual orientation, if I’m lesbianism. He has right to choose what life he wants that not to be influenced by the people’s view about the homosexual that is a point because must people will be effected by the others’ views, and will changed their minds. I can’t help to think about he was so hard to face the press in his generation.

Most people can’t accept the homosexual around them that even hate them. They who hate the people just because of they are gay, or lesbianism. I think it is ridiculous thing, we cant judge someone depend on their sexual orientation. In face, I’m so glad to get along with the person who is homosexual. I don’t know why they are friendlier than the normal guys. This generation should be changed about the impression of homosexual, but it is hard….

Gay Rights

1.This article suggests that gays and lesbians in Taiwan are generally afraid to “come out” to their family. The article goes on to suggest that most families operate under a “don’t-ask, don’t-tell” policy. In other words, most families just don’t want to know if they have a gay son, daughter, brother, sister, and so on. In your opinion, do you think this is correct? This article is from 2004. Do you think the situation is any different now?

I think the person who is gay or lesbian should get the support from family because the family is most part in our life. When we have any emotion as upset, worry, sad, happy, and so on, the members of family are the first we want to tell. They get us encourages to face our barrier. When the gays or lesbians who meet any discrimination from the society, where they can go? I think the family should not operate under a “don’t-ask, don’t-tell”, they should active to care their family member. Now it is 2008 that I think the situation are totally different because more and more people they can acceptance the gays and lesbians. The person who is homosexual is not a big deal that s/he still has the right to live as normal.

2. The article above suggests that Taiwan was about to become the first Asian country to allow gay marriage. This was in 2004. What happened to this legislation? Did it get voted on? Did it pass? Did if fail? Do some research and find out the state of affairs. What do you think should happen? What do you think will happen? Be specific.

As we know, there are more and more people bravely to show their sexual orientation. When I walk on the street, the homosexual can easily to be seen in Taipei. So that means they can feel free to show their physical affection without any fears. Every time when I see them, I don’t feel any different. Because it’s true love too, no one restrict people have to fall in love with the opposite sex. Of course there is no law to rule people which relationship is the correct way. Furthermore, people have the right to show their physical affection even it's different from most people. Love is not judge by sex, color or age. But true love is what we really want. No matter lesbian or gay, the relationship they have is true love. Thus, I don't feel any special about their relationship and most of the people can accept them too. So no matter both of lesbian or gay relationship they kiss on the street or have a real big hug that it is their right to show their loves to each other. Like opposite sex relationship they do the same way as them, so why do we have to use different standard to judge homosexual relationship? So we should accept all the different love from all the different people

Response Questions-testing cosmetics on animals

1. It’s quite easy to get an emotional response out of people when we talk about how animals are treated. This is also true of animal testing for medical research. However, many would say that animal testing has led to many medical breakthroughs that have dramatically reduced human suffering around the world. After reading the two articles above, what do you think about medical testing? Is it justified and necessary?

The medical testing is necessary thing because of we don’t have any test before using the medical, we will have potential risk because the researchers have the science advances to GUESS any side effect on the human body. But the human bodies are verities that are unique. You will do not know the side effect when using the medical.

3. What do you think of animal testing on cosmetics? Does it matter to you what kind of animals are used (whether it’s mice, rabbits, dogs, primates, ect?). Remember that without animal testing, cosmetics may end up much more expensive and possibly have greater risk to humans.

I think even the animal testing on cosmetics is very not mercy for animal, but we will have potential risk when we don’t have any test before using the cosmetics. The endanger animals should not be the testing animals. If we still want to test some cosmetics, we should use the animals that are not endangered as mice.

Whale War

I think the thing is ridiculous about they said they hunt for scientific research; but in the truth, they hunting the whale for food, not for research. In honestly, we didn’t have effective way to ban this because we can’t accurate to know propose when they are hunting. It is too long distinction in the environment and the people who want to prevent the endanger species because the both side have different though in the same thing. Some one believes the hunting boats are for research which is their TRUE purpose. Some people said they know the true purpose is for food. We can’t figure out which side is right.

Many people in Asia to earn the money depends on the hunting the Whale. If they can’t to fish the Whale, they will have no money to live. It’s worthy to sympathize, but the hunting the Whale is an immorality thing. I think effective way to avoid the thing is change the hobby of diet. If people don’t eat organ of the whale, the fish men will not to hunt the whale.

Animal Rights

the Animal Protection Act

I think the penalty is too lenient. Especially only the person, who abuses animals, causes serious harm to animal, uses live animals to be the prizes of game, and sells dead dogs or cats in the public that his/her photographs will be made in the News, Newspaper, and TV. I think the any person who was violence the amendment that their photographs should be published, not only above the reasons. According the amendment, I can’t help to think the punishment is effect, or not. Maybe the person who was be punished will abusing his or her animals more serious in the secret, and no one knows. I think if the people were being found, and their animals should be taken care by the government. The penalty is not sufficient to avoid the abusing. The government should give the sinner the lessons or asks to do something for public welfare. Only find the money is not enough.

Animals Taiwan

They are some volunteers who want to improve the homeless pets and treatment of animals in Taiwan. Their purpose is try to find some solutions for the problems are about the abusing animals, pet overpopulation that they want teach the people through education, their efforts, and different outreach programs. The group is take care the homeless pets, and help they can be adopted. They want to save the livelihood, and also give the useful information on the website to teach people the right thing.

cheating or not cheating

1. Copying a few pages from Wikipedia and turning it in as your assignment. cheating
2. Asking someone else to write a few paragraphs of your paper for you—but you still do most of it. cheating
3. Asking someone to proofread your assignment and fix the grammar mistakes for you. not cheating
4. Having someone read what you wrote and tell you if they can understand it or not. You take their ideas and fix what you wrote. not cheating
5. Using an article from an English language learning website by copying it and turning it in. cheating
6. Finding an article online that says exactly what you were thinking, so you just turn that in. cheating
7. Reading an article that you found online, thinking about it, and then writing a response in your own words. not cheating
8. Doing a writing assignment for one class and then turning it in for two, three, or even more classes because you are too busy to do another writing assignment. cheating
9. Finding some writing online, but changing some of the verbs and nouns before you turn it in. cheating
10. Finding a paper online, but changing all of the verbs before you turn it in. cheating
11. Copying an article that you found, but you don’t get caught so no one ever knows about it. cheating

In my opinion, if the student who is cheating in class, s/he should be failed the subject, then double check the others classes’ assignments and quizzes which are cheating, or not. But we should give the second chance to the student who cheats because every one has mistakes like stolen the money from the parents, and didn’t hand in the assignments, and so on. Most mistakes can be forgiven, why the cheating shouldn’t be forgiven? People need have second chance to learn the things which are right, or not. I think the lessons which teach the student to recognize the thing is cheating or not. This is a way to fix their mistakes. Maybe they didn’t know before!

Academic Honesty Questions

Questions 1:

In Taiwan, lots of people judge one person depends on the score and the school. It is the important reason for the students wants to cheat. When you look for the career, the human resource manager depends on the school is good or bed which is point you have the job or not. If you have great school, you will be hired. If you have worst school, you don’t have any chance to be hired. It is ridiculous thing because some people have great ability to work or do something well but they have bed score in school, so they want to cheat for higher score, for the higher chance to get the job. Most reasons are they want the higher grade, but they don’t have ability to get even they are study hard. I know some people who cheated before, but I didn’t see they do the thing recently.

Questions 2:

Giving a fail score, and expelling from the school are the punishments in Taiwan. In the same time, the thing will be written down on the transcript. And you have the mark that means the mark will tell the person who looks at the transcript you are cheating person. I think we can give the fail score and expel, but we should give the person who was cheated the second chance. If the thing was written down on the transcript, the person can’t be given the second chance to change anymore. Every one will be judge the person is bed guy. So I think we can give the fail score and expel from the school, but we can’t written down the reason why the person give a fail grade or expel from school. When we punish the person, we should teach some lessons about the cheating for him/her that it is a way to avoid the person do the same thing again.

Questions 3:

The standard about judging the person in the society need to be changed that should not depends on the score or the rate of school that the problem will be solved. But we know it is hard to change. Before the standard is change, I think the way to solve the problem is quit the quizzes and assignments, which use the paper. The teacher would test their students in using the oral test one by one. In this way the student could not try to cheat because they don’t have way to cheat in front of the teacher.

the penalty for Plagiarism

The penalty for plagiarism at Stanford University?

The standard punishment for a first-time violation is a one-quarter suspension and 40 hours of community service. The student would be given one-quarter suspension into a two-quarter delay in the conferral of the degree, if his final quarter of enrollment the standard practice

Six punishment for Plagiarism at University of Washington

  1. Disciplinary Warning: verbal or written notification that the student has not met the University's standards of conduct, and that a repeated offense will result in more serious disciplinary action. It is not the case that first offenses automatically receive a warning; most first offenses receive a stricter response, with warnings reserved for cases with unusual mitigating circumstances.
  2. Reprimand: a written statement censuring a student for violating University regulations, and stating that another offense will result in more serious action. This is normally considered a lenient response, even for first offenses.
  3. Restitution: requirement that the student compensate the University or other persons for damages, injuries, or losses. Failure to comply results in canceled registration and a hold on future registration.
  4. Disciplinary Probation: an action that places conditions on the student's continued attendance at the University, including the statement that further violation of University policies will likely result in dismissal. The Committee fixes the term and conditions of academic probation. First offenses often result in probation.
  5. Suspension: a written statement notifying a student that his or her enrollment has been suspended for a specific period of time for violating University policy. The statement includes the terms and length of the suspension, as well as the conditions for re-admittance.
  6. Dismissal: a written statement notifying a student that his or her attendance at the University has been terminated for violating University policy. Unlike suspension, dismissal is considered to be a permanent action. However, the institution may also provide conditions for re-admittance.

Fired for Plagiarism Examples

  1. Winston L. Frost, his article titled “The Development of Human Rights Discourse: A History of the Human Rights Movement” included large portions of text lifted from the Encyclopaedia Britannica and a 1983 paper by legal scholar Jerome J. Shestack.
  2. A veteran political reporter on Sacramento Bee who admitted to taking quotes and information from other newspapers and making up comments attributed to a non-existent author. Dennis Love, 46, had been covering the presidential election.
  3. Madonna G. Constantine, the former professor of psychology and education at Columbia University’s Teachers College who was fired of plagiarism because he had plagiarized the work of two former students and a former colleague
My opitons for the punishments
I agree with the punishment because they who were plagiarize need more time to learn what is illegal, what is not. Every student had to do their job well- study that they can’t use the material and Internet to copy and paste for assignments that the act is not responsible. When they have one-quarter suspension or two-quarter suspension, they should think about their behavior and feel regret.

women’s rights (update)

Question 3

It works so hard in work of the popular culture because people would spend most time in a day to work, and they often meet the many challenges. Less sleep, and over work that cause they have heavy pressure in work. Under the pressure, their biological clock has been reversed.

So many people think only men can bear the stress of work, but nowadays many women have more endurable to overcome the challenges, and more interesting in the work of the popular culture. Because they have more interesting than men, they are willing to spend must time to work. In the society, many people still think women are hard to work in popular culture for a long time, and have good achievements. So women need to spend many times to prove that they have some capability as man, and strive the opportunity to be director, but only few people can be superintendents. So women in the work place are wear formal cloths that wants to look clever, and able person that have chance to change the discrimination.

I think the women's age range is around 21-35; only few women are over 35 years old who still work in the situation because they maybe will quit the job for following reasons. First, they didn't have time to accompany their family, or have no opportunity to find a good boyfriend. Second, they meet the discrimination when they are working. Some women will be meet sexual harassments by unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical. Third, illnesses and symptoms emerge because of that are overtime to work.

I think I have gender stereotypes between the male and female because I consider the women will quit in many reasons, but in the fact many men will quiz in previous reasons. Men didn't have time to accompany their family, or have no opportunity to find a girlfriend, and will meet sexual harassments by unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical when they are in workplace. The victim as well as the harasser may be a woman or a man that does not have to be of the opposite sex. Illnesses and symptoms emerge because of that are overtime to work. Most time, men will meet the some problems (or discrimination), not only women will meet. But most time, I considered the victim is woman, not men. :(

Question 4

According the article, the CLA's proposal that is intended to help boost the nation's sagging birth rate. But the proposal has already generated a whirlwind of debate among labor and women rights groups and the public at large. Because women in Taiwan earn 20 to 30 percent less than men, so that the man's income is a family's main revenue source. The proposed subsidy for fathers is therefore not big enough to encourage most men to forfeit their normal salary.

Only 38.7 percent of the corporations in Taiwan that fit "an employer hiring more than two hundred and fifty employees shall set up childcare facilities or provide suitable childcare measures have complied with regulations." The government's policy of establishing a comprehensive community childcare network has not been adequately enforced. - These are the causes that many people think the policy is not sufficient.

I think the Maternity Leave is help for new mothers, but it is hard to comply in all companies that women are often threatened with being fired and forced to take pay cuts. Some of companies refuse to reimburse their wages while they are on maternity leave. They will find the loophole in the law that it is hard to be found by the government. If the government wants to increase the birth rate, the policy should be enforced, and compensation should come in various forms, such as educational support, and the pregnant support.

my opinion for the humanities education.

I think that learn the humanities education is valuable to student because it helps us to analysis, deeper thinking, and so on. We also can be learned the experiences by the literature, history, and philosophy. Many students are bored by the study, but I think the humanities education just like story. It's the real story, which we can get many experiences from there.

For example, many heroes failed in the history. Do you know what was cause the result? Maybe it's the character's personality or the wrong decision, or something else. We can figure out the answer in the history. If we meet the similar things in the reality, we can know how to avoid failure.

I believe Knowledge is Power, and the knowledge is from the humanities education. If you feel the study is so boring, you can change the way of thinking. Perhaps you can find the interesting things in humanities education.

Respond to Second Life.

I think the words, everything is not impossible, is the best sentence to the 3D game. In Second Life, you can do everything which you didn't have chance to do and can't to do in the reality. The game is relying on the imagination. Every one can satisfy their own dream as create company to sale their things, be the lawyer, be a landlord, and so on. Many people work in the game very well, and extend the job to the real life. Many students use the game to promote their study. But I can't help to think the flaw in the game.

For example, you can go the school in the Second Life to learn everything, as you want. To most students, it is the wonderful thing. In my opinion, I don’t think it's a good idea to the students. The reason is that go to the real school, the student can learn the communication and interaction with the teacher and classmates, which can't be learned by the online game. Nobody could live without the connection of people.

Even though must people think the computer can substitute the human being in the future. I believe the computer can't replace the real life. Many things in the real life are worthy to learn that can't be learned in the book and the fictitious life as experiences of job, the communication with the family, and so on.
